Coventry United 0-1 Lewes

Timms strikes late to earn the Rooks a priceless victory at Butts Park Arena

Georgia Timms’ last-gasp goal saw Lewes steal all three points thanks to a 1-0 victory over Coventry United in the FA Women’s Championship.

The hosts looked set to claim their first clean sheet of the season thanks to a dogged defensive display, but the striker’s instinctive late effort was enough for the visitors to put an end to a three game winless run.

Susan Wood had been remarkable in the United net, as she kept out the Rooks’ strikers time and time again, while Tatiana Saunders had to produce the goods at the other end to keep the scores level.

But Timms was on hand to poke the ball home in injury time to break Coventry hearts and leave the home side bottom of the table.

KEY MOMENTS

It was the visitors who got off to the best start at Butts Park Arena, with Simran Jhamat having the ball in the net in the early stages, but the assistant referee had already raised the flag for offside.

Ini-Abasi Umotong was next to try her luck, with the striker fancying her chances from distance, but Wood in the hosts’ goal was well positioned to keep the effort out.

And Wood had to be on her toes again just before the break, as Jhamat had another try from 25 yards, with the goalkeeper having to tip the ball onto the crossbar to keep the scores level at the interval.

The second half started just how the first had finished, with Wood keeping out a close range header from Jhamat, as the duo’s personal dual continued, with the shot stopper holding the upper hand.

The hosts then had a flurry of chances around the hour mark, with Fran Orthodoxu and Beth Merrick both flashing efforts wide of Saunders’ goal.

Umotong dragged another effort wide for the visitors soon after, before substitute Katie Rood was denied by some excellent work from the hosts’ defence to snuff out any danger.

Saunders then produced a moment of quality at the other end to deny Amber Hughes, with the striker having her shot on the turn tipped onto the crossbar, as both teams continued to search for a winner.

And the visiting goalkeeper had to be on her toes once again late on to deny Keeley Davies, with it looking like both teams would have to settle for a point.

But Timms had other ideas, as she ghosted into the penalty area in injury time to steer the ball home from Emma Jones' centre, and give her side all three points right at the death.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

In a match as close as this one there is always one moment that decides where the points end up, and it was Timms who produced that late in the day at Butts Park Arena.

The striker's instinctive finish from Jones' ball into the box made all the difference in this one, with the impressive Wood left without a chance of making a save.
